Lost...

Because I do EVERYTHING out of step, I am ONLY NOW watching the TV show LOST.

Well, I can certainly understand why people were so captivated watching this show. It definitely would have driven me bonkers waiting an entire week to watch each episode. Isn’t it interesting how quickly we’ve all learned to want the entire show right now? But that’s a subject for another blog post…

Anyhow, whenever I watch anything my writer brain runs nonstop in the background while I’m enjoying (or not) the show, constantly assessing the creator’s intent.

Wow, am I ever boggled as to what the hell is going on in the LOST writers’ brains. Honestly, it feels like they all dropped multiple tabs of acid and just let their imaginations rip.

*****SPOILERS AHEAD*****

*****(JUST IN CASE I’M NOT THE ONLY PERSON IN THE UNIVERSE WHO HASN’T SEEN IT YET, LOL)*****

It must have been hilarious to watch this show with the entire nation when the polar bear popped out of the jungle. I was hooked and have been ever since. I am currently on season 4, which is lamentably short (yeah, it’s because of writers…but we need to eat, too, so I forgive them for striking). I think I finally see where the polar bear came from. I thought there was a zoo (you know, the one where Sawyer was held), but now I’m thinking that creepy tunnel might be the polar bear highway?

Anyhow, my suspicion—bolstered by some internet researching and cheating—is that the writers were producing the scripts by the seats of their pants. It certainly feels that way to me.

It must have been fun to just write whatever nutty idea came into their heads and I must say I feel a bit grudgy that TV and movie writers can get away with so much and viewers forgive them. As a romance writer, one of my biggest pet peeves is when people complain about misunderstandings between the characters and how it could all be cleared up if they would just COMMUNICATE.

Hey! Romance novels are about people IN LOVE. If there is anyone more irrational than lovers, I never want to meet them. I would seriously have to suspend disbelief if I read a romance novel where the lovers sit down, and in a calm, rational fashion, tell each other about all their worries, fears, insecurities, etc. I don’t want to read that, either, because I suspect it would be like reading about an oil and gas contract negotiation.

How the hell did I segue from LOST to romance novels, LOL??

I might find it frustrating the way LOST picks up and drops story lines constantly with no explanation or resolution, but I sure am enjoying the bonkers feel of the show. I just know, deep down in my writer heart, that there cannot be a way to end a series like this that will be anywhere near as good as the story has been. But that’s their problem, not mine.

Okay, here is a list of my top 5 favorite characters and least favorite characters:

Best:

  1. Jack (yeah, yeah, yeah. What can I say? He’s a romance writer’s wet dream)
  2. Sawyer (another romance writer’s wet dream, although I wish he’d get a haircut)
  3. Eko (why oh why did they have to kill him off so quickly??)
  4. Sun (I forgive her for cheating on Jin, which evidently many viewers did not!)
  5. Hurley (I love him because he is often the only voice of (bizarre) reason)

Least favorite:

  1. Locke (ARRGH!!! Why does he keep blowing shit up??? Why? Why? Why?)
  2. Claire (the character is boring and then there is all that screeching in that awful nasal voice)
  3. Charlie (annoying in every way and that’s not even counting “You all everybody!”)
  4. Kate (I started off loving her but she just flip flops between the two guys TOO DAMNED OFTEN. I mean, once or twice, or even 3 times, but she changes her mind several times a season)
  5. Michael (everything about him is annoying. Even his kid finds him annoying.)

So, there you have it. My reflections on a 21-year-old TV series, lol.

I’ll leave you with a picture of Pickles, sleeping with one eye open outside my office window (you can kind of see the reflection).
